We need to learn how to thrive in uncertain environments because we don’t know where technology is going to take us. Settling for the “safe” path is no longer safe. Safe is risky because you’ve given yourself one set of skills, and if those skills are no longer valuable, you have no job.
The safe path is to develop many skills, but most importantly, the skill of learning. The job you will hold in 10 years probably does not exist right now, thus you’ll have to learn a lot in order to perform it. The job you’ll hold in 20 years probably doesn’t exist either! You will have to be a lifetime learner.
It sucks not knowing what your future looks like. It’s uncomfortable. Uncertainty causes stress and anxiety, because we become fearful of the potential downside. If we can become world class learners, we won’t need to stress about an uncertain future because we will be ready to take advantage of whatever comes our way. We will start to see change as something positive and full of opportunity.
