To find how you can be valuable, look at the things that everyone else is doing, then don’t do those things. There’s a reason why the night shift gets paid more than a regular time. The supply of people willing to do it is lower.
I don’t think you should start working nights just to make a little extra money, but what you should do is look at the things that other people value highly. If everyone longs for a secure job with a steady salary, what’s scarce is people wanting to work for startups. Since most people desire certainty, what’s scarce is people willing to wrestle with uncertainty. For that reason, there can be tremendous upside (equity ownership and company growth) for those willing to do what’s scarce.
Everyone is on 5 social media platforms, getting constant notifications and struggling to stay afloat. What’s scarce today is focus. How can you focus on one medium and be great at it? Instead of being mediocre on 5.
Everyone is hiding behind a screen. What’s scarce is being willing to put yourself out there and be with people.
