It’s helpful to be in a room where you are the best person at the task at hand. It’s also helpful to be in a room where you are the worst person at the task at hand.
There is tremendous learning from each situation. Anytime you work with a small group of youth, you can see the fluctuations in confidence as group attendance varies. One day, the overpowering voices are absent, and you see new kids step up. The next day, the quietest kids go volunteer in the elementary school and they are the most charismatic people in the room.
Ability level is another form of diversity. It’s important to remember that no singular team or group can be perfectly diverse. That’s why in the education of young people they must experience countless new contexts that are all diverse in their own ways.
They can build confidence when they’re the best and learn rapidly when they’re the worst. All so they can thrive when they’re with peers of the same level.
