The potential for online learning to revolutionize education is huge. With data analysis, natural language processing and machine learning, students can have their own customized learning playlists.
There’s no doubt that it’s a hyper efficient method of delivery. But what do we lose when we go to a model like this?
Throwing students onto laptops for 6 hours per day isn’t what will prepare them for the real world.
The model needs to be a hybrid. Technology can be used to teach the basics, but the goal should be to clear away time for real learning to occur. For students to be curious and build things. For students to meet people and make change. For students to gain confidence and see themselves as problem solvers.
There is no playlist for that. But if we can have an AI take care of the fundamentals, we can leave the humanity to the teachers.
