One thing I find troubling about politics and campaigning is that at the end of the day it’s about a vote. One vote. That you can only cast for one person in the field.
To some extent it’s about the ideas and solutions that a candidate is proposing, but it only matters if you vote.
If I’m working for a campaign, my number one priority is getting you to vote for my candidate. Which means my number one priority is not solving a problem for real people.
It’s a zero sum game. Just pick a person to support.
It would be much healthier and productive if instead our system incentivized actually solving problems. Rather than the Bernie people and the Yang people and the Warren people and the Biden people arguing about who is the best person, we would be developing sensible solutions to challenging problems.
Every four years so much energy goes into convincing people to support a person. I just wish we could spend more of that time and money on solving real problems in new ways.
