One of the foundational rules of improv comedy is to say "yes" then to build on what the other person said.
Accept the suggested reality and build on it.
It's an important principle when building a comedic scene, but it's also so powerful in creativity. Saying "no" shuts down a discussion. It discourages people from adding new ideas.
Saying yes establishes a creative culture where people support each other and try to work together to make things happen.
This is true even in personal situations. "Let's go to the beach!"
"No, I want to play golf."
As opposed to
"Let's go to the beach!"
"Yes and let's play golf on the way!"
A little yes can make a big difference.
Which kind of culture are you personally encouraging?
