I often find myself sitting, staring at my laptop and metaphorically bashing my head into the screen. I’m jumping from task to task indiscriminately and not making progress on any of them.
One day I was struggling to finish up a reflection for a class when I realized that I’d been sitting all day. I hadn’t run around. I wasn’t enjoying the fresh fall air. I changed and took the soccer ball outside to juggle it and kick it against the fence. After just 15 minutes of running around and escaping into this world, my mind was fresher than ever. I took a few more shots to banish all of my pent up frustration and went inside. I found my mind was fresher than it had been in hours and I breezed through my work with a newfound focus.
Long periods of sitting may seem like intense focus, but in reality our focus dwindles and productivity falls. Motion and play are the antidote. How are you using the two to boost your creative output?
