Kids care. They just need a place to apply their caring.
In nearly all forms of education, we require students to care about their future well-being in an abstract way. “Practice these problems so you will be prepared for college.”
Rarely do we say “this will help you right now.” Or “this will help your little brother right now.” Or “this will help your community right now.”
Some may care enough and have enough patience to prepare for a far off future. But for too many, the reality of tomorrow is imminent. They need ways to improve and to deliver value here and now. They still care, they just don’t have as much time to wait.
