Objects at rest stay at rest. People at rest also stay at rest.
What would it take to get someone to take a leap like they’ve never taken before? To take a creative risk that is generous and bold.
Could someone do this entirely on their own?
Theoretically a realization that they want to be better, or a provocative Instagram post, or a motivational sports figure could be the outside force that begins motion. But these all seem like weak and uncertain possibilities to rely on.
If we do take as given that an outside force needs to act upon a person at some point along the way, when is the right time for that to happen? Where is the line between encouragement and coercion? Between suggestion and mandate? Who is the right person to make this happen?
I think it’s a matter of progression. At first you help a little. Then a little more. Then a little more. Slowly pushing and encouraging motion, until eventually you reach a point at which you can set something into permanent orbit. That tipping point is often the biggest push, the one filled with the most fear, and the one that you remember far into the future.
Where are you at rest? When are you in motion? And who might need a little push?
