Simon Sinek said that the best book on persuasion was written 25 years ago. Every book on the topic since then has been rehashing the same ideas that he laid out in Influence.
So does that mean that whenever someone says. “Hey Zack, how can I be more persuasive?” that I point them to Influence and end the conversation there? It would be great if everyone has read the book and learned the concepts. But when someone asks you a question, you have the opportunity to share knowledge with the individual that is uniquely valuable in that moment.
You provide the value by remixing the information and giving it to someone new through your perspective. So what does this mean for your work? It’s probably been said before. You’re not creating anything new. Your job is rehashing what’s been said in a way that’s uniquely accessible to your particular audience.
You don’t need to create new knowledge. Everything we need already exists out there. Don’t let a fear of repetition stop you from putting ideas into the world. We need your voice.
