“Anything worth memorizing is worth looking up.” – Seth Godin
As someone who has been in plenty of classes with incessant memorizers, I believe this to be true.
People refute it all the time. They say that “doctors need to memorize. They need to know every part of the body and how they interact.”
I agree. But that is not memorization, that is learning.
I don’t think we need to “learn how to memorize.” It’s not a skill worth knowing. Doctors aren’t able to learn the human body because they had years of memorization practice in school.
Memorizing is not learning. There are ways to become expert memorizers. You can use these tricks to memorize the order of an entire deck of cards. I posit this skill wouldn’t make doctors better at their job.
Learning is something that happens because you care. Memorizing is something that happens when you want it to look like you care.
Anyone can learn how to memorize. Most people never learn how to care.
