What is the solution to this problem of not knowing what you will enjoy in 20 years? Where could we ever go without a goal to shoot for? The solution is to have a process that works most of the time.
Instead of having a goal that is defined by an outcome of a certain job, amount of money, livelihood, let’s set our goals for being great at some process. Our process has to create value for another human being and involve personal growth. If we can be great at the process of creating value, making someone smile and changing someone’s mind, we never have to worry about what the next job is.
If you’re great at understanding needs and satisfying them, you can do anything.
We’re spending time torturing ourselves now with hopes that it will some day end and we will feel great in the future. In financial modeling we discount future cash flows. In life, we should discount future happiness. The risk of wasting your 20’s so that your 30’s can be great is just too high.
The best way to handle an uncertain future is to thrive in the present. Just keep doing that until the it’s suddenly the future and you’re still thriving.
