In the bizarre world of ultra running, competitors help each other break records. I saw this happen in the short documentary Made to be Broken about Karl Meltzer’s record-breaking hike of the Appalachian Trail.
Scott Jurek, the previous record holder, came along on part of Karl’s journey. He helped deliver food and prepare supplies as Karl got close to finishing his trek. Scott actively wanted Karl to break his record, so much so that he was physically present to see it through.
What a profound lesson in opposition to the winner-take-all mindset. Not all of life is about winning. The rising tide lifts all boats.
