Boston.com called it “The ultimate cult beer.” Heady Topper is a double IPA brewed in Waterbury, Vermont. It was rated the top beer in the world for a few years.
It isn’t served on draft and they strongly recommend that you drink it out of their silver and black can. It’s hard to find and that isn’t by chance. They only distribute within a 25 mile radius of Waterbury, Vermont.
Along with their brewery in Waterbury the Alchemist operates a retail shop in Stowe. People drive hundreds of miles to get their hands on this beer, but instead of making a bigger store, they limit access. So much so that on their website it says, “We regulate the number of people we let into the retail space at one time. On hot days we recommend an umbrella, sunscreen and water.”
They are telling you that you’re going to have to wait in line to go in. Oh, and by the way, you’re only allowed to buy 2 four packs per person per day. They’re only 12.50 per four pack, but on Ebay they go for upwards of $50 for a 4 pack.
It’s not easy, but if you’re a beer enthusiast, you have to get your hands on a Heady Topper. And that’s part of the magic.
