As I’m typing this with one hand, I’m sitting in a strange german coffee shop holding a mediocre bacon egg and cheese in my other hand. My eager, productive-minded self is screaming to finish the sandwich as fast as possible so I can type with two hands. I almost listened, but first, I paused. What’s the rush?
Is it worth not tasting this sandwich just so I can type a little faster a little sooner? It may seem logical, but if you can’t enjoy a bacon, egg and cheese, what can you enjoy? All jokes aside, if we go through life checking off our chores just to get to the next thing, we’re going to be met with a sad reality when the next thing no longer excites us.
You are as young as you will ever be today. The longer you wait, the older you get and more time goes by that you can’t get back. The first step to breaking this vicious cycle is realizing that we’re always creating it for ourselves. We go to class, just to be done with class, just to be home, just to do homework for class, just to go to class the next day. If we’re always looking forward, we’re never living.
So next time you feel yourself wanting to just get past the next thing, pause. Dig into that feeling and relax. Let the urgency go and consciously try enjoy those few moments. The more you can find this joy, happier you will be! You will start to enjoy the little things and find meaning hidden in your daily habits.
