“Enlightened trial and error succeeds over the planning of the lone genius.” – Peter Skillman
In the famous Nightline segment from 1999, they show IDEO’s design process. IDEO has designed toothbrushes, toys, trains and medical devices, but they are not experts in any one of these disciplines. Their strategy is instead to become experts in the process. Their process is what allows them to consistently great designs.
Why is this great news? If you follow a similar process, you too can also make great designs! The keys are:
- talk to experts
- understand the problems
- come up with lots of ideas
- define goals and parameters
- pick the best ideas
- prototype quickly
- test in the real world
- repeat ^
