Do the people around you know how they could help take your business or career to the next level? It may feel uncomfortable to put it out there, but it’s important for people to know your mission.
I was introduced to this idea in a podcast featuring a wealth manager. Here’s how he uses this tip in action:
First, he asks people what trigger words indicate that someone might become a customer of theirs in a few months.
This is brilliant because he’s asking for how he can help them, but in a unique way.
Second, he explains what his triggers are. He says that if someone is looking to sell their business, then they will likely need a wealth manager in the next 3-6 months.
He has now planted the seed for how people can help him, but he says this under the guise of giving value. It’s not that he’s tricking anyone, but it’s all a very smooth and natural exchange.
Lastly, the other person explains what their tell-tale signs are. Now both parties know how they can help each other by recognizing potential future clients.
I first want to applaud this guy for this suave way of establishing this communication. This also got me thinking, do my peers and connections know the best way to help me? Have I made it clear what my mission is? While I’m not in a direct client business like this, I still need things (like a job next year).
Maybe it’d be best for us to be a little more direct with our wants and needs. After all, it’s not easy to do the conversational judo necessary to discover someone’s true passions. Let’s make it all a little easier on ourselves.
If there’s anything you need, leave a comment and maybe someone will take you up on it.
