It’s a hot day on the golf course. You’re thirsty and finally see a cooler up ahead.
As you pull closer there’s a little white sign on it that says “Do not fill bottles.”
It’s a confusing sign because you already bought a water bottle, which you finished on the 6th hole and you haven’t seen a cooler for the last hour. All you want to do is to fill up your bottle!
This sign was made by someone who thinks their job is to refill the coolers twice per day. If you thought your job was to keep people hydrated, you wouldn’t make that sign. You would refill the coolers as many times as needed to do your job.
Is your job the task? Or is it the outcome?
Ignore the routine of filling the coolers twice per day and instead, work towards the higher purpose of keeping people hydrated.
