Richard Garfield wasn’t in grad school to make a card game. Though he did love trying new games with his friends, he enrolled to study combinatorial mathematics.
He discovered this fascinating game where players moved up and down through social ranks and was fascinated. He talked to others and tried to trace this game’s roots. People from all over played versions of it, dating all the way back to ancient china. Garfield ended up creating his own version called The Great Dalmuti. A beloved game that I played throughout my childhood. For that, I thank him.
He didn’t set out to make a hit card game, but his passion led him to the right place.
Other than Dalmuti, you may recognize his name as the creator of Magic the Gathering.
You never know where your passion might lead you.
