Huge McCleod did a neat interview on David Kadavy’s show earlier this week. Hugh’s famous for his cartoons and illustrated a book with Seth Godin.
What struck me was his perspective on creative DNA. He doesn’t have the patience for long term projects that require investors, editors, actors and years of work. So he started drawing on the back of business cards. Drawing on a business card doesn’t require anyone’s permission and if it’s bad, you just draw another!
That’s how Hugh operates. That’s a part of his creative DNA. Some people publish three great novels in their life and that’s all. Other’s publish thousands of blog posts, or draw hundreds of paintings. The important part is recognizing what works best for you.
If you tried pottery but it didn’t work for you, no problem. Maybe you started writing music, but it wasn’t enjoyable enough. Don’t stop looking for something that fits your creative DNA. Write, play, draw, sculpt, dance, act, joke, sing, paint or anything in between. The right one is in there somewhere.
What will you do with it?
