It’s not hard to do something once, but it sure it overwhelming to do something every day. You can draw one picture, come up with one idea or give one compliment today, but the thought of doing it every day is dizzying. What a silly way to look at life. An average person walks 110,000 miles in their lifetime. A staggering number, but on a daily basis, it’s just over 3 miles each day. Is that too much to ask?
If an aggregate is impressive, but the task isn’t that hard to do today, what’s valuable is a habit? The habit is valuable because it takes discipline. Not a ton of discipline, but just enough that most people aren’t willing to do it. Seth Godin writes one blog post every day. If he wants to write a book in one year, he’ll look back and find 365 ideas that he can use. At that point, you might as well publish a book because it’s nearly written itself.
Make the habit now. Pile up small wins and eventually you’ll find a big success.
