Today on Tim Ferriss’ podcast, Dan Pink said that when you try to control people they do one of two things: comply or defy.
They either listen your every word and do what they’re told. Or they ignore it and just do what they want. I would argue that neither of those outcomes are optimal.
So what is there to do? It seems the only option is to not try to control people. That is no guarantee of success, but only when you give up control do you have the chance of people taking responsibility, using judgment and growing into great leaders.
