Hint: It’s the same reason why I eat a whole bag of chips at 11pm but I never would at 1pm.
You have a finite amount of decision making power. When you have to make dozens of menial decisions, your energy becomes depleted. Choosing what to wear and what to eat for breakfast may not seem like substantial decisions, but they still require thought.
CEO’s are always trying to reduce the amount of menial decisions they have to make so that they have plenty of energy saved for making the big decisions. This has been well-documented. One of the prime examples is that Obama only wears two color suits. Boom. He barely has to worry about that anymore. That translates to more to more mental energy to make inevitable, tough decisions that arise throughout the day.
After a long day sometimes I’ll come home and eat a ton of chips. Why? Because I’m out of energy. Everything I’ve done and all the mental energy I’ve spent has worn down my ability to make good decisions.
Where can you simplify part of your life so you have more energy for what matters?
