There’s an important idea in Jainism that can be translated as “manysidedness.” The reasoning behind manysidedness is that everything in the world has countless different sides and it’s not possible to see them all at once. Thus, you can never know the true nature of something. When you look at one side, you’re missing another. It’s always changing and you can never see them all at once.
Why am I telling you this? This little idea shows up all over. We may think we know a situation, but really, we only can see a few sides of it. In reality, there are infinite different perspectives and we can never have perfect information.
We should be hesitant to judge knowing there are many sides of which we’re unaware.
We shouldn’t wait for everything to make perfect sense before we start. It’s impossible to see it all at once.
We should be curious, because knowing more sides gets us closer to the truth.
