I’ve been blessed in the past year to have people in my work world who question my certainty. The interaction might go a little like this:
“It sounds like we’ll get this payment by next Friday.”
“Are you sure?”
“Well… it sounded like they would send it on Thursday, but I haven’t heard since last week… okay, no I’m not sure. I will follow up to clarify.”
We all are making assumptions constantly. Some of those assumptions are great like assuming that the mold on your fruit is probably bad for you. But other assumptions should be examined like assuming the person who you scheduled a meeting with last month will show up today.
When in doubt, seek more clarity. Follow up and ask.
In order to do that, you have to recognize when you’re assuming. It surely helps to have people in your life that are willing to ask “are you sure?” but it’s also possible to make that a habit of mind for yourself.
There’s no need to wait. Find more clarity, transparency and definition. It’s all out there if you’re willing to ask.
