Austin Kleon’s book, Steal Like an Artist, is one of my favorites of all time. I read the whole thing on a short plane ride, but the creative inspiration didn’t stop there. It’s full of images and quotes that I’ve now put up all over my room. I see them every day.
The very first piece of wisdom is, “All advice is autobiographical.”
I knew advice was usually misleading, but I didn’t realize it was so simple. The reason most advice doesn’t work is because people are not advising YOU, they’re advising their younger selves.
This isn’t to say that all advice is bad. We just need to understand where it’s coming from. If you don’t want to become that person, you should be wary of taking the advice.
You should always get a variety of opinions, but in the end, the choice is for you to make.
