During my workshop the other day, I tried to tell a story about the collapse of the piano industry in the early 1900s. It fell flat on its face.
I had heard the idea a few times, but I didn’t know it well enough to tell the story. Swirling around in my mind were dozens of half-baked stories that illustrated important points, yet I didn’t know any of them well enough to tell. Ideas are important, but instead of constantly seeking out more ideas, we eventually need to develop them into moving stories. Stories are what people remember.
You don’t need a lot of stories. In fact, it’d probably be better if you told the same ones repeatedly because then we might start to truly learn and understand.
We allĀ have lots of ideas, but what are your stories?
